At a time when computers were largely confined to university mainframes and corporate research labs, Lakeside School was a rarity, possessing a Teletype terminal that provided them with access to a GE time-sharing computer. Their enthusiasm for computing led them to seek out more opportunities, even if it meant bending a few rules. They famously "dumpster dived" for discarded printouts of mainframe operating system source code, eager to understand the inner workings of these complex systems. This partnership, which also included Paul Gilbert, aimed to automate the analysis of traffic data collected from roadway counters. They designed a system using an Intel 8008 microprocessor to read data from punched paper tapes and generate reports for traffic engineers. While Traf-O-Data was not a significant commercial success, ultimately losing $3,400 between 1974 and 1980, the experience proved invaluable. It provided Gates and Allen with practical exposure to microprocessors and the challenges of building software for them, teaching them to simulate how microprocessors worked and develop software even before the hardware was complete.
The pivotal moment that would irrevocably alter their trajectories arrived in December 1974. Paul Allen, then working as a programmer at Honeywell in Boston, stumbled upon the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics magazine. The cover prominently featured the Altair 8800, a groundbreaking microcomputer kit that promised to bring computing power to hobbyists. Allen, recognizing the immense potential of this affordable personal computer, immediately rushed to Bill Gates, who was then a student at Harvard University. They both understood that the price of computers would soon drop significantly, making software development for these machines a highly profitable venture.
Their audacious idea was to develop a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800. BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was a popular, easy-to-learn programming language, and they believed that providing an interpreter would make the Altair far more accessible and attractive to a wider audience. There was just one small hurdle: they didn't actually have an interpreter, nor did they possess an Altair system on which to develop or test one. Undeterred, they contacted Ed Roberts, the founder of Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the company behind the Altair. In a bold move, they falsely informed Roberts that they were developing a BASIC interpreter for his machine and inquired if he would be interested in seeing a demonstration. This calculated bluff, a common industry tactic to gauge interest, worked. Roberts, intrigued, agreed to a demonstration in a few weeks.
What followed was an intense period of frantic development. Working at a feverish pace, Gates and Allen utilized a PDP-10 mainframe computer at Harvard. Allen adapted an Intel 8008 emulator he had previously written for Traf-O-Data to simulate the Altair's Intel 8080 processor. They even enlisted the help of fellow Harvard student Monte Davidoff to write the crucial math routines for the interpreter. In what became a legendary tale, Paul Allen completed the final part of the code, including a bootstrap program to load the interpreter into memory, during the flight to Albuquerque for the demonstration. The demonstration to Roberts in March 1975 was a resounding success. Roberts was reportedly astonished when the machine, after Allen typed "PRINT 2+2," responded with "4."
This triumphant demonstration led to a distribution agreement with MITS. MITS would distribute their BASIC interpreter, marketing it as Altair BASIC. This pivotal moment marked the official birth of their new company. On April 4, 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen formally established "Micro-Soft" in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with Gates as CEO. The hyphen in the name, a portmanteau of "microcomputer" and "software," was dropped within a year, and the company was officially registered as "Microsoft" with the Secretary of State of New Mexico on November 26, 1976.
Altair BASIC became Microsoft's first product and laid the foundation for their future endeavors. It was incredibly compact, fitting into just four kilobytes of memory, and its success cemented the idea that software, not just hardware, was a valuable commodity in the nascent personal computing market. The company's early revenue totaled $16,005 by the end of 1976.
