On August 16, 1858, the first official telegram passed through the transatlantic cable. It was a message of congratulations from Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom to President James Buchanan of the United States. The Queen's 98-word message took approximately 16 hours to transmit, while President Buchanan's 149-word reply took 10 hours. Though incredibly slow by modern standards, and even by the expectations of the time, this was a monumental achievement, shrinking the weeks of ocean travel to a matter of hours.
The initial public excitement, however, was short-lived. The signal quality on the 1858 cable was poor, and transmissions were agonizingly slow, often requiring numerous retransmissions to decipher. In an attempt to improve the speed, the chief electrician, Wildman Whitehouse, applied excessive voltage to the cable. This proved to be a fatal mistake. Within three weeks of its inauguration, the cable's insulation failed, and it ceased functioning entirely on October 20, 1858.
