The mid-19th century witnessed a rapid proliferation of photographic techniques. In 1842, Sir John Herschel, a brilliant polymath who also coined the terms "photography," "negative," and "positive," invented the cyanotype process, known for its distinctive Prussian blue images. This affordable and relatively simple method found practical application in reproducing architectural plans, giving us the term "blueprint." A few years later, in 1847, Niépce St. Victor, a cousin of Nicéphore Niépce, advanced photography by publishing his invention of creating glass plates with an albumen emulsion, offering improved detail over paper negatives.

However, it was Frederick Scott Archer's wet collodion process, introduced in 1851, that truly revolutionized the medium. This technique involved coating a glass plate with a sticky solution of collodion and light-sensitive chemicals, exposing it while still wet, and developing it immediately. The wet collodion process offered the best of both worlds: the exquisite detail of the daguerreotype combined with the reproducibility of Talbot’s calotype. It became the dominant photographic process for decades, enabling a boom in portrait studios and documenting historical events like the American Civil War with unprecedented clarity. The downside, of course, was the need for a portable darkroom to prepare and develop plates on location, making outdoor photography a logistical challenge.

The invention of dry plates in the 1870s, which could be prepared in advance and developed later, freed photographers from their mobile darkrooms. This convenience paved the way for George Eastman, a visionary entrepreneur, to democratize photography. Four years later, he launched the first Kodak camera, a simple box camera pre-loaded with film, bearing the slogan "You press the button, we do the rest." This additive color process used microscopic dyed potato starch grains on a glass plate to capture color images, producing beautiful, albeit somewhat muted, results. Autochrome remained the primary color photographic process until the advent of more convenient color films like Kodachrome in the 1930s.

The 20th century saw film photography mature and diversify. The development of smaller, more portable cameras, like Oskar Barnack’s Leica prototype in the 1910s (leading to its commercial release in the 1920s), ushered in the era of 35mm photography. This smaller format, combined with faster lenses and increasingly sophisticated film emulsions, allowed for greater spontaneity and candid street photography, moving away from the often posed and static images of earlier eras. Photojournalism thrived as photographers could now capture fast-moving events with agility. Single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, which allowed photographers to see exactly what the lens saw, became the workhorses for professionals and serious amateurs alike, offering interchangeable lenses and precise control.

The latter half of the 20th century witnessed further refinements in film technology, with improved color accuracy, finer grain, and greater sensitivity to light (higher ISOs). Automatic exposure systems and autofocus capabilities began to appear in cameras, making photography easier for casual users while still offering manual control for experienced photographers. Instant photography, pioneered by Edwin Land with the Polaroid camera in 1947, added another dimension, providing immediate gratification and fostering a culture of instant sharing, long before digital cameras made it ubiquitous.

Then came the digital revolution. While early digital imaging experiments date back to the 1960s, the first true digital camera, a prototype developed by Steven Sasson at Eastman Kodak in 1975, recorded black and white images onto a cassette tape. It was clunky, slow, and low-resolution, but it proved the concept. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the commercialization of digital cameras, initially expensive and aimed at professionals. Adobe Photoshop, released in 1990, provided powerful digital editing capabilities, giving photographers unprecedented control over their images in the "digital darkroom."
