Heuristics are not always learned; some are likely innate, hardwired into our brains through evolution. For example, the "gaze heuristic" is used by baseball outfielders to catch fly balls. Rather than trying to calculate the ball's trajectory and speed, the outfielder simply fixates their gaze on the ball and runs in a way that keeps the angle of their gaze constant. The representativeness heuristic can lead us to overestimate the likelihood of the less common outcome (librarian) because it's more representative of our mental image. This is known as the "base rate fallacy," a cognitive bias that results from using the representativeness heuristic inappropriately.

Another common heuristic is the "availability heuristic," which we touched upon in Chapter Two. This is the tendency to overestimate the likelihood of events that are easily recalled, often because they are vivid, recent, or emotionally charged. After seeing several news reports about shark attacks, you might overestimate the risk of being attacked by a shark, even though the statistical probability is extremely low. The news reports have made shark attacks more "available" in your memory, leading you to perceive them as more common than they actually are.

The availability heuristic can also influence our perceptions of risk in other areas. For example, people tend to overestimate the likelihood of dying in a plane crash or a terrorist attack, while underestimating the likelihood of dying from heart disease or a car accident. This is because plane crashes and terrorist attacks are more dramatic and receive more media coverage, making them more readily available in our memories. Car accidents and heart disease, while far more common, are less sensational and therefore less likely to be recalled.

The availability heuristic doesn't just affect our perceptions of risk; it can also influence our judgments about other things. For example, if you're asked to estimate the number of words that begin with the letter "K" versus the number of words that have "K" as their third letter, you're likely to overestimate the former and underestimate the latter. This is because it's easier to think of words that begin with "K" (e.g., king, kite, kangaroo) than it is to think of words that have "K" as their third letter (e.g., ask, awkward, baker). The ease with which examples come to mind influences our judgment of frequency.

The "affect heuristic" is another powerful mental shortcut. This is the tendency to rely on our emotions, our "gut feelings," to make decisions. If something feels good, we tend to judge it as beneficial and low-risk; if something feels bad, we tend to judge it as harmful and high-risk.

The affect heuristic can be incredibly efficient, allowing us to make quick decisions without having to consciously weigh the pros and cons. If you're offered a piece of cake, your immediate emotional response – pleasure, delight – might lead you to accept it without thinking about the calories or the sugar content.

However, the affect heuristic can also lead to biased judgments, particularly when our emotions are not directly relevant to the decision at hand. For example, studies have shown that people are more likely to invest in a company if they have positive feelings about its brand or its products, even if the company's financial performance is poor. Their positive emotions "spill over" into their assessment of the investment, leading them to overestimate its potential.
