He began developing his punch card-based data processing machines in 1884, eventually securing a patent for his electromechanical tabulating machine in 1889. His system involved punching holes into stiff paper cards, with the presence or absence of a hole at a specific location representing a piece of data. For instance, a hole in one spot might signify "married," while its absence meant "single."
Hollerith's invention was truly groundbreaking. It offered a practical and efficient way to process large volumes of data, something that had previously been a monumental and error-prone manual task. His machines could count and sort these punched cards, providing a semi-automatic method for summarizing information. The system comprised a punch to create the holes, a tabulator to read and count them, and a sorter to group the cards into categories.
The U.S. Census Bureau sponsored a competition to find a more efficient means of tabulating the 1890 census data, and Hollerith's invention emerged as the clear winner. While the 1880 census had taken over eight years to complete, the 1890 census was tallied in just six months and all the data was detailed within two years, saving the U.S. government millions of dollars. Another key innovation came in 1888, when Alexander Dey invented the dial recorder. This device was an early form of a "punch-in, punch-out" time clock, designed to keep track of employee attendance. Dey's dial recorder provided a spring-driven clock with a cast-iron wheel perforated with numbered holes. Employees would press a pointer into a hole corresponding to their assigned number, and the machine would record the time on a preprinted sheet, even using a two-color ribbon to distinguish regular time from tardiness or overtime. The Dey Time Register Company, formed by Alexander and his brother John Dey, would eventually be acquired by the International Time Recording Company, another vital component in IBM's eventual formation.
In 1889, Willard Bundy, a jeweler from Auburn, New York, created a time clock to record workers' arrival and departure times on a paper tape. Bundy's invention, building on existing technologies, offered a practical instrument for social use, and his brother, Harlow, a keen businessman, immediately saw its commercial potential. That same year, Harlow Bundy incorporated the Bundy Manufacturing Company, the first company in the world specifically dedicated to manufacturing time recording machines.
