The name "DAT" was an acronym derived from the surnames of the company's three principal investors: Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Shun Taro Takeuchi. This initial vehicle was a two-cylinder, ten-horsepower model, marking a crucial step in Japan's automotive ambitions. The DAT car was initially conceived as a passenger car, but the limited market for such vehicles in early 20th-century Japan soon prompted a shift in focus.

The company recognized the greater demand for commercial vehicles, and thus, DAT began producing trucks. This pivot was a pragmatic response to market realities and would prove to be a recurring theme in the history of Nissan – adaptability in the face of evolving economic and social landscapes. By 1918, the company had been renamed the DAT Motorcar Co., reflecting its expanding scope.

Parallel to DAT's development, another crucial player emerged: Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd., founded in Osaka in 1919. This company was a collaboration between American automotive engineer William R. Gorham and Japanese businessman Kubota. Gorham brought his technical expertise, while Kubota provided the financial backing and local connections necessary to establish an automotive manufacturing operation in Japan. Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo initially focused on producing three-wheeled vehicles and eventually built a small car known as the Gorham.

The paths of these two pioneering companies converged in 1926 when DAT Motorcar Co. and Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Co. merged to form DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. This consolidation represented a significant step towards a more unified automotive industry in Japan. The new entity continued to produce both DAT cars and trucks, consolidating their respective experiences and resources. The merger, while bringing together two significant early Japanese automakers, still operated on a relatively modest scale. The true catalyst for Nissan's emergence came with the involvement of Yoshisuke Aikawa.

Aikawa was a shrewd industrialist with a keen eye for opportunity. He had founded Tobata Foundry Co., Ltd., a company that manufactured automotive parts. Aikawa’s vision extended beyond simply producing components; he saw the immense potential in full-scale automobile manufacturing. In 1931, Tobata Foundry acquired DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., a move that provided the much-needed capital and industrial backing for the struggling automotive venture. This acquisition marked a turning point, injecting new life and strategic direction into the enterprise.

With Tobata Foundry's backing, the production of a new, smaller car, designed for a broader market, began. This new vehicle was named the "Datson," meaning "son of DAT." The "son" was meant to convey a smaller version of the existing DAT cars. However, in 1933, the name was changed to "Datsun." This seemingly minor alteration was, in fact, a clever linguistic and symbolic maneuver. The Japanese word "sun" (son) can also mean "loss" or "disadvantage," so to avoid any negative connotations, "sun" (as in the celestial body) was adopted instead. The "rising sun" imagery was, and remains, a powerful symbol in Japan, lending a more positive and aspirational feel to the brand. The Datsun name would go on to become synonymous with Nissan for decades, particularly in international markets.

The year 1933 is officially recognized as the founding date of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. It was in this year that Yoshisuke Aikawa officially established Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd., which then acquired all the assets for manufacturing Datsun cars from Tobata Foundry Co., Ltd. The following year, in 1934, the company's name was formally changed to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The name "Nissan" itself is an abbreviation of "Nippon Sangyo," meaning "Japan Industries," which was the parent holding company established by Aikawa. This new corporate structure reflected Aikawa’s ambitious vision of creating a vertically integrated industrial conglomerate, with automobile manufacturing as a central pillar.

The establishment of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. marked the formal birth of a major player in the Japanese automotive industry. Under Aikawa’s leadership, the company began to rapidly expand its production capabilities. Early investments were made in modern manufacturing techniques and machinery, many imported from the United States, to increase efficiency and output. The Yokohama Plant, established in 1935, became a crucial hub for engine production and a center for research and development, laying the groundwork for Nissan's future powertrain innovations.
