Introduction

The land known today as Iraq has been at the heart of human history for millennia. As the cradle of civilization, ancient Mesopotamia witnessed the birth of writing, the emergence of the first cities, and the rise and fall of magnificent empires. Its rivers—the Tigris and Euphrates—nurtured societies whose scientific, artistic, and legal achievements laid foundational stones for the modern world. Yet, Iraq's history is not merely ancient; it is also marked by a relentless process of change, conflict, and adaptation that continues into the present day.

A History of Iraq is a journey through the intricately woven tapestry of this region’s past and present. It seeks to offer insights into the forces that have shaped Iraq, from the earliest human settlements through to the contemporary challenges it faces in a rapidly transforming Middle East. The narrative ranges from celebrated figures such as Hammurabi and Harun al-Rashid to the ordinary people whose resilience and resourcefulness have sustained Iraqi society through war, empire, and revolution.

As one of the world’s oldest inhabited territories, Iraq’s borders have expanded and contracted under the ambitions of empires, both local and foreign. Throughout centuries, the region was vibrant with scholarship, trade, and culture, only to face devastation from conquest, internal divisions, and environmental pressures. The arrival of Islam brought profound religious and political transformations, much as later Ottoman, British, and Ba’athist rule imposed their own order and often turmoil.

In more recent times, Iraq has been shaped by formidable challenges: colonial legacies, coups, wars, sanctions, and sectarian strife. The 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation catalyzed new waves of violence and brought Iraq to the center of global attention. Yet, throughout these ordeals, Iraqis have persevered, seeking stability, identity, and a voice in their country’s political destiny.

This book endeavors to present Iraq’s history not simply as a succession of rulers and wars, but as the lived experience of its people—their beliefs, their hardships, and their hopes for the future. Each chapter focuses on pivotal episodes and themes that have defined Iraq’s development, examining how the interplay of power, faith, geography, and culture has shaped a nation both ancient and modern. In understanding Iraq’s history, we gain not only knowledge of its past but also perspective on its enduring importance in the world today.
