Its elegant, double-oval shape provided the perfect balance of tension and flexibility, allowing it to hold papers securely without tearing them, and to be easily applied and removed. It was also remarkably simple and cost-effective to produce, requiring only a single continuous piece of wire bent into the precise shape. This efficiency in manufacturing was crucial to its widespread adoption. By the early 1900s, the Gem paperclip had become the de facto standard, copied and mass-produced worldwide.

The paperclip's success wasn't just about its superior design; it also benefited from the burgeoning office supply industry.
