CHAPTER ONE: The Dawn of an Ambitious Dream: Founding and Vision
The last quarter of the nineteenth century was a period of explosive growth and transformation in the United States, marked by industrialization, westward expansion, and a burgeoning sense of national identity. The traditional college model, often rooted in classical studies and religious instruction, was giving way to a new vision: the research university. The new University of Chicago was officially incorporated in 1890. William Rainey Harper officially accepted the presidency in April 1891, taking office on July 1 of that year. Classes officially began on October 1, 1892, with an inaugural enrollment of 594 men and women.
