This landlocked nation shares borders with five countries: Russia to the east and north, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its position far from oceanic influences, yet still affected by air masses from the Atlantic, contributes significantly to its characteristic humid continental climate and dictates the rhythm of its seasons.

The topography of Belarus is predominantly flat, a legacy etched into the land by the colossal forces of Pleistocene glaciation.
