It validated the idea that external infrastructure could communicate with a vehicle to control its path.

This era’s approach was fundamentally different from modern autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, the concept of a truly autonomous vehicle, one that could navigate any road under any condition without relying on special infrastructure, seemed firmly in the realm of science fiction. The gap between the guided cable car of the 1950s and a car that could safely handle rush hour traffic on its own was a chasm that contemporary technology couldn't bridge.
