Other groups populated the lands surrounding Lake Pontchartrain and along the tributaries of the Mississippi. The Acolapissa, whose name in Choctaw means "those who hear and see," originally lived in several villages along the Pearl River. Pressured by slave raids, they moved to the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain around 1702 before eventually relocating to the banks of the Mississippi. They were known to be skilled hunters, farmers, and artisans who adorned their bodies with tattoos and built temples to display wooden and stone sculptures.
The Houma were another significant presence. French explorers in the late 17th century found them living along the Red River and later on the east bank of the Mississippi, north of the future city. Their territory was marked by a tall, red pole, or Istrouma, which gave Baton Rouge its name. The Houma cultivated maize, beans, and squash and were adept fishermen who used cypress dugout canoes. Like many tribes, they suffered devastating losses from European diseases and warfare, which forced them to migrate southward into the bayous of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes.
The specific site where the French would establish their city, a crescent-shaped bend in the river, held a unique strategic importance long before their arrival. It was known to the native peoples as Bulbancha, a Choctaw term meaning "the place of many tongues." This name was not a poetic flourish but a literal description of the area's function. It was a nexus, a natural meeting point for the diverse peoples of the region. The key to its importance was a well-established portage route. Native people could paddle their canoes from Lake Pontchartrain into a waterway known as Bayouk Choupic, or Bayou St. John. To bridge these linguistic divides, a common trade language known as Mobilian Jargon developed, a simplified tongue that facilitated communication across hundreds of miles of the Gulf Coast and Mississippi Valley.
The market at Bulbancha was a vibrant exchange. Salt, a vital commodity, was traded alongside flint for tools, buffalo meat and skins, pottery, and medicinal plants. It was a place where news was exchanged, alliances were forged, and cultural traditions were shared. The area was not a dense, permanent settlement in the European sense, but rather a well-known and frequently used crossroads, a neutral ground whose primary purpose was to facilitate interaction among many different peoples.
The arrival of the first Europeans in the Gulf of Mexico in the 16th century marked the beginning of a profound disruption. Spanish explorers like Hernando de Soto passed through the region, leaving a wake of violence and, more devastatingly, disease. Pathogens to which the Indigenous populations had no immunity swept through native communities, causing catastrophic population declines long before sustained contact was established. By the late 17th century, when French explorers began their systematic push down the Mississippi from Canada, the tribal landscape they encountered was already one in flux, shaped by these invisible killers.
When Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and his brother Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville explored the region for France in 1699, they were guided by local peoples through the very waterways that made Bulbancha so important. The English, operating out of the Carolinas, armed certain tribes like the Chickasaw and encouraged them to raid others for slaves, adding a brutal new dynamic to regional politics. The Chitimacha, for instance, engaged in a twelve-year war with the French and their native allies in the early 1700s, a conflict sparked by French aggression and slave raids that ultimately decimated the Chitimacha population and pushed them westward.
Thus, on the eve of its founding, the land called Bulbancha was in no way an empty wilderness. It was a place with a deep and complex human history stretching back for millennia. It was a landscape shaped by one of the world's most powerful rivers, a rich and bountiful ecosystem that had sustained sophisticated societies for centuries.
