Introduction

CHAPTER ONE: The Stanford Garage: From Backrub to Google

In the middle of the 1990s, Stanford University was more than just an academic institution; it was the humming, overclocked central processor of the nascent digital revolution. The air on campus, thick with the scent of eucalyptus and ambition, carried whispers of IPOs and nascent technologies that promised to reshape the world. This was the fertile ground where the World Wide Web, a recent and chaotic arrival, was seen not as a novelty but as a frontier—a vast, disorganized library in desperate need of a card catalog. Into this environment of intellectual ferment and entrepreneurial zeal stepped two graduate students in computer science who, on the surface, seemed an unlikely pair. They would go on to build the definitive catalog for that digital library, and in doing so, create one of the most powerful companies in history.

Larry Page arrived at Stanford in 1995, a son of Michigan academic royalty. His father, Dr. Carl Page, was a pioneering professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at Michigan State University; his mother, Gloria, taught computer programming. The Page household was a symphony of whirring first-generation personal computers and stacks of technology magazines. From a young age, Larry was encouraged to be curious and inventive, famously building a functioning inkjet printer out of LEGO bricks. He possessed a quiet, intense demeanor, driven by a deep-seated desire to create things that would have a massive impact.

Sergey Brin, by contrast, was more gregarious and outwardly expressive. Born in Moscow to Russian Jewish parents, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1979 at the age of six to escape growing anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. Like Page, he was the child of an academic; his father became a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland. A math prodigy, Brin completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science in just three years before heading to Stanford for his PhD. He was driven by a fascination with extracting meaningful patterns from large, complex datasets.

Their first meeting, during a new student orientation in 1995, was reportedly a clash of strong minds. Brin was a volunteer guide, and Page was in his tour group. They debated every topic that arose, each finding the other opinionated and perhaps a little arrogant. But beneath the initial friction lay a shared intellectual foundation and a mutual respect for ambitious ideas. They "became intellectual soul-mates and close friends," as Brin would later describe it, finding common ground in their fascination with the structure of the emerging web.

At the time, the web was a chaotic digital landscape. Early search engines like AltaVista, Lycos, and Excite attempted to impose order by primarily counting the number of times a keyword appeared on a page. This method was rudimentary and easily manipulated. A webpage creator could simply repeat a word like "university" a thousand times to appear at the top of a search, regardless of the page's actual relevance or authority. The experience for users was often a frustrating trawl through lists of low-quality, irrelevant results. Page and Brin recognized that this was a deeply flawed approach.

The conceptual breakthrough came from Page. Ruminating on the problem, he considered the world of academic research. The importance of a scholarly paper is often judged by the number of times it is cited by other papers. Crucially, a citation from a highly respected, frequently cited paper carries more weight than one from an obscure journal. Page had a sudden insight: what if the link structure of the web could be treated in the same way? A link from one webpage to another could be considered a "vote" or a citation. A page with many links pointing to it was likely to be more important than one with few. Furthermore, a link from an authoritative site like the New York Times should count for much more than a link from a random personal blog.

This was the core idea that would revolutionize search. It shifted the focus from a page's own content to the collective judgment of the entire web. Together, Page and Brin began to develop the mathematics and infrastructure to turn this concept into a working system. Their research project, started in 1996, needed a name. Reflecting its central function of analyzing the web's "back links," they called it "Backrub."

Working from their Stanford dorm rooms, which they transformed into a makeshift data center and programming lab, they began the monumental task of crawling and indexing a portion of the web. They became resourceful scavengers, haunting the loading docks of the computer science department for newly arrived PCs they could borrow and cobbling together a network of inexpensive machines. To house the hard drives for their first server, they built a famously quirky and practical cabinet from colorful LEGO bricks, a testament to both their limited budget and Page's childhood inventiveness. The project was computationally intensive; at one point, their web crawler consumed nearly half of Stanford's entire network bandwidth.

The initial version of Backrub went live on Stanford's private network in August 1996. Written in Java and Python, it ran on a collection of Sun Ultra and Intel Pentium machines. The primary database was stored on a Sun Ultra II server with a 28GB hard drive. As they refined the algorithm, which they would eventually formalize and name "PageRank," it became clear that Backrub delivered results far superior to any existing search engine. It had an uncanny ability to surface relevant, authoritative pages, effectively solving the quality problem that plagued its competitors. The project quickly gained popularity within the university.

By 1997, Page and Brin recognized that "Backrub" was perhaps not the most commercially appealing name for their creation. During a brainstorming session with other graduate students, the name "googol" was suggested. A googol is the mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, perfectly capturing their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information. Legend has it that a fellow student, checking to see if the domain name was available, accidentally typed "google.com" instead of "googol.com." Page liked the sound of the misspelling, and on September 15, 1997, the domain was registered.

Initially, the founders had no intention of starting their own company. Their goal was to license their superior search technology to one of the established players of the day, such as Yahoo! or AltaVista. They pitched their idea around Silicon Valley but were met with a surprising lack of interest. The existing search companies, which were building themselves into multifaceted "portals" with news, email, and stock quotes, didn't see the value in a dramatically better search function. In fact, they saw it as a threat. Their business model depended on keeping users on their site for as long as possible to view ads. A search engine that sent users away to the best possible result too quickly was counterproductive to that goal. David Filo, a co-founder of Yahoo!, reportedly advised them that if their technology was as good as they claimed, they should drop out of school and build the company themselves.

Taking that advice to heart, Page and Brin decided to go it alone. They needed seed funding to move beyond the confines of Stanford's network. Their break came in August 1998, through a meeting with Andy Bechtolsheim, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a legendary Silicon Valley investor. Bechtolsheim was short on time, so Page and Brin gave him a quick demo on the porch of a Stanford faculty member's house. Bechtolsheim immediately grasped the potential of their technology. Saying he had to run, he told them, "Instead of us discussing all the details, why don't I just write you a check?"

He made out the check for $100,000, but there was a problem. He had written it to "Google, Inc." At that moment, no such legal entity existed. For weeks, the check sat uncashed in Page's desk drawer while he and Brin scrambled to file the necessary incorporation paperwork. With Bechtolsheim's check as a catalyst, they quickly raised around $1 million from family, friends, and other angel investors. On September 4, 1998, Google Inc. was officially born.

Having taken a leave of absence from their PhD programs, they needed a place to work. For a rent of $1,700 a month, they moved their servers and their fledgling operation out of their dorm rooms and into the garage of a friend in nearby Menlo Park, California. The owner of the garage was Susan Wojcicki, who would later join the company and eventually become the CEO of YouTube. That modest suburban garage, located at 232 Santa Margarita Avenue, became the company's first official headquarters.

It was in that garage that they also hired their first employee, Craig Silverstein, a fellow Stanford computer science PhD student. Silverstein, who also put his doctoral studies on hold, became the director of technology and was instrumental in helping the co-founders build out the core search engine. The small team worked relentlessly, surrounded by a ping-pong table, a washer and dryer, and the ambition to build a company that could index the entire internet. From this humble, almost mythical Silicon Valley beginning, the company and its deceptively simple search box were ready to be introduced to the world.
