It was, in essence, an early form of digital communication, converting letters into a numeric code that could be transmitted visually. The Polybius Square was a significant intellectual leap, demonstrating a desire for more specific and detailed long-distance messaging. However, its practicality was limited. It required trained operators, clear nights, and a great deal of patience. Polybius himself noted that earlier, simpler systems, like one devised by Aeneas Tacticus involving water clocks, were also attempts to move beyond basic fire signals but were similarly limited in what they could convey.
While visual signals like smoke and fire were effective in open country and clear weather, they were useless in dense forests, heavy fog, or driving rain. In these environments, sound reigned supreme. From the blast of a horn to the beat of a drum, auditory signals offered a different way to conquer distance. Drums, in particular, are one of the most ancient musical instruments, and their use as a communication device is nearly as old. Found in cultures across the globe, they served as a powerful tool to broadcast messages through landscapes where the line of sight was poor.
The most sophisticated use of drums for communication was perfected in West Africa, with the development of so-called "talking drums." These instruments, typically hourglass-shaped drums like the Yoruba dùndún or the Asante atumpan, do not simply beat out a rhythmic code like Morse code. Instead, a skilled drummer can manipulate the pitch of the drum to mimic the tones, rhythms, and inflections of human speech. This is possible because many West African languages, such as Yoruba or Asante, are tonal. In a tonal language, the meaning of a word can change based on the pitch at which it is spoken.
The construction of the hourglass-shaped talking drum is key to its function. The two drumheads at either end are connected by a series of leather tension cords. The drummer holds the drum under one arm and strikes the head with a curved stick. By squeezing or releasing the tension cords with their arm, the drummer can instantly change the tension of the drumhead, producing a higher or lower pitch. This allows them to replicate the high, middle, and low tones of their language, effectively making the drum "speak."
A skilled player could send complex messages over distances of 4-5 miles, and in some cases, networks of drummers could relay messages much farther. These messages were not limited to simple warnings. Drummers could announce ceremonies, narrate histories, tell stories, and even share gossip or poetry. Each individual could even have a "drum name," a specific phrase that identified them, allowing messages to be addressed to a particular person. The drum language was so rich and nuanced that it was often indistinguishable from speech to a trained ear. Research has shown a very high acoustic correlation between the drum's patterns and the spoken Yoruba language when the drum is used in "talking" mode.
Of course, drum communication had its own set of limitations. The range was finite, and the message could be distorted by terrain or other noises. Furthermore, just like a smoke signal, a drum message could be intercepted by anyone within earshot who understood the language of the drum. This led to the development of a kind of proverbial or poetic "drum language" that obscured the meaning for those not versed in its specific idioms, adding a layer of security. The skill was also not easily acquired; it took years of training to become a master drummer capable of both sending and interpreting these complex messages.
Besides drums, other sound-based instruments were widely used for signaling, though they generally lacked the linguistic complexity of the talking drum. Horns, fashioned from animal horns or conch shells, and later, metal trumpets, have been used for millennia to broadcast simple, powerful signals. The ancient Roman army, for instance, used a variety of brass instruments like the cornu and the tuba to direct troop movements on a chaotic battlefield. The most famous example is Silbo Gomero, a whistled language used by the inhabitants of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The island's deep, steep-sided ravines and narrow valleys made travel arduous, but the clear air was perfect for carrying sound. Shepherds and villagers developed a way to replicate the sounds of Castilian Spanish using only whistled tones.
Silbo Gomero is not a separate language but a whistled register of Spanish. It works by reducing the vowels and consonants of Spanish into a smaller set of whistled sounds. Two distinct whistles replace the five Spanish vowels, and four whistles are used for the consonants. By manipulating the pitch and continuity of the whistles, a skilled silbador (whistler) can articulate any Spanish word. This allows for the transmission of fully formed, complex sentences and conversations over distances of up to three kilometers. This remarkable system, born from the unique topography of the island, allowed communities to share news, give warnings, and arrange meetings across impassable terrain.
