Benz excelled, enrolling in the local grammar school and later the scientifically oriented Lyceum. At the age of 15, he passed the entrance exam for mechanical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, the local polytechnic institute from which he would graduate in 1864 at just 19 years old.

His early career was a series of professional posts in various engineering firms across Germany, from Karlsruhe to Mannheim and even a brief stint in Vienna. Yet, none of these positions truly satisfied him. Benz was an avid cyclist, and it was his fascination with the mechanics of the bicycle that fueled a larger obsession: the creation of a "horseless carriage." The entire enterprise would have collapsed had it not been for the timely intervention of Benz's fiancée, Bertha Ringer. A woman of remarkable foresight and resolve, Bertha used her dowry to buy out Ritter's share, effectively saving the company and investing her own future in Karl's vision. They married in 1872, and for the rest of his life, Karl would credit Bertha as the one person who stood by him when all others doubted.

Financial hardship remained a constant companion. The new company, which focused on producing industrial machines and eventually stationary gas engines, struggled. There were times when tools had to be pawned just to stay afloat. Through it all, Benz relentlessly tinkered in his workshop, consumed by the challenge of creating a viable internal combustion engine. For years, he experimented with two-stroke engines, finally getting a stationary version to run for the first time on New Year's Eve in 1879. It was a significant milestone, a humming testament to his persistence. The success of his stationary engines provided a sliver of financial stability, enough for Benz to pursue his ultimate passion. After disagreements with his partners in his second company, he left in 1883 to establish a new venture, Benz & Cie. Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik, alongside new backers. This company would be the cradle of the automobile.

At Benz & Cie., while the primary business was selling stationary gas engines, Karl dedicated himself to designing his motor carriage. He decided to work with a four-stroke engine, following the general principles laid out by Nikolaus Otto, but with his own crucial innovations. Rather than building just an engine, he meticulously designed the entire vehicle. It was to be a lightweight, three-wheeled creation. The choice of three wheels was a pragmatic one; it elegantly solved the problem of steering, which was a significant engineering hurdle for four-wheeled contraptions of the era. A simple tiller connected to a single front wheel was far less complex than the steering systems available at the time.

The machine that took shape was a marvel of purpose-built engineering. The chassis was made of bent steel tubing, forming a light but strong frame. The engine itself was a 954cc single-cylinder unit, mounted horizontally at the rear. It was remarkably light for its time, weighing around 220 pounds (100 kg). A large horizontal flywheel was a key feature, designed to stabilize the power output from the single-cylinder engine and ensure smoother operation. Benz designed many of the key components himself, including a groundbreaking high-voltage ignition system with a trembler coil and a spark plug. He also devised a system of evaporative cooling, where water was dripped onto the cylinder to dissipate heat.

Power was transmitted from the engine to the rear wheels via a simple but effective system of belts and chains. A hand lever next to the driver's seat served as both a gearshift and a brake. Pushing it forward applied a wooden block brake, while pulling it back engaged a leather belt, transferring power to the solid rear axle. The vehicle had only a single forward gear and no reverse. The wheels were another of Benz's own designs, featuring steel spokes and solid rubber tires, a significant improvement over the wooden or iron-shod wheels common on horse-drawn carts. It was a complete, self-contained concept, a vehicle where every part was designed to work with every other.

On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz took his design to the imperial patent office and filed patent number DRP 37435 for a "vehicle with gas engine operation." This document is, unequivocally, the birth certificate of the automobile. That summer, on July 3, 1886, Benz undertook the first public test drive on the Ringstrasse in Mannheim. The event was met with more curiosity and derision than acclaim. The noisy, sputtering contraption, moving at a top speed of about 10 miles per hour (16 km/h), frightened horses and bewildered onlookers. To many, it was a smelly, ridiculous toy, a poor substitute for a reliable horse.

Public skepticism and a lack of business acumen from the inventor himself meant that initial sales were virtually non-existent. Karl Benz was a brilliant engineer, but he was not a natural salesman. He was prone to fits of doubt, and the lackluster reception of his invention did little to bolster his confidence. The fate of the automobile, it seemed, rested not on its inventor, but on his indomitable wife. Bertha Benz, who had financed the project with her dowry and supported Karl through years of struggle, understood that the world needed to see what the Patent-Motorwagen could do. It needed a practical demonstration, not just a short jaunt around the city.

In the early morning hours of an August day in 1888, Bertha decided to act. Without telling her husband, she and her two teenage sons, Eugen and Richard, wheeled the improved Benz Patent-Motorwagen Model III out of the workshop. Leaving a note on the kitchen table, they embarked on a journey that would change history: a drive from Mannheim to her mother's home in Pforzheim, a distance of some 66 miles (106 km). This was not just a trip; it was the world's first long-distance automobile journey, a daring publicity stunt, and a grueling road test rolled into one.

The challenges they faced were immense. The roads were little more than unpaved wagon tracks, dusty and rugged. There were no road signs and certainly no gas stations. The vehicle's fuel was Ligroin, a petroleum-based cleaning solvent that could only be purchased at pharmacies. The trio made a now-legendary stop at the town pharmacy in Wiesloch to buy more fuel, an act that has enshrined it in history as the world's first fueling station.

Bertha's ingenuity was tested at every turn. When a fuel line became clogged, she cleared it with her hatpin. When a bare ignition wire shorted out, she used one of her garters as insulation. The primitive wooden brakes began to wear out, so Bertha sought out a cobbler and had him nail leather strips to the brake blocks, in the process inventing the world's first brake pads. The vehicle's single gear was not sufficient for steep inclines, meaning that Eugen and Richard frequently had to get out and push the car up hills. This difficulty led Bertha to suggest to Karl that he add another, lower gear for climbing, a crucial improvement that was incorporated into subsequent models.

After more than twelve grueling hours, the trio arrived in Pforzheim at dusk. Bertha promptly sent a telegram to Karl to inform him of their success. The news of her journey had already spread like wildfire, passed from town to town as people witnessed the strange horseless carriage chugging through their villages. Her audacious trip was a resounding success. It proved to a skeptical public that the automobile was not just a novelty but a viable means of transport. It was the perfect marketing coup, demonstrating the machine's practicality in a way no sales pitch ever could.

The journey also provided invaluable real-world data. It was the first proper road test, revealing weaknesses and prompting critical upgrades. Based on Bertha's feedback, Karl Benz not only added a second gear but also improved the braking system. The improved Model III, incorporating these lessons, was exhibited at the Munich Engineering Exposition in September 1888, where it drew significant attention and even won a gold medal. The following year, it was shown at the Paris Exposition, bringing the invention to a wider international audience.

Sales finally began to pick up. One of the first customers was a Parisian bicycle manufacturer named Émile Roger, who had already been building Benz engines under license. Roger became the first sales agent for Benz automobiles, selling them in France and securing many of the early orders. Production slowly ramped up. Approximately 25 of the original Patent-Motorwagen models (I, II, and III) were built between 1886 and 1894. While these numbers seem minuscule by modern standards, they represented the very beginning of a commercial industry.

In 1893, Benz introduced a pivotal innovation: the double-pivot steering system, for which he received a patent. This design solved the complex problem of how to steer a four-wheeled vehicle effectively and was first implemented on the Benz Victoria model. The Victoria, a two-passenger car with a 3-horsepower engine, was a success, selling 85 units in its first year. It was followed in 1894 by the Benz Velo, a lighter and more affordable compact car that is widely considered the world's first series-production automobile. It even competed in the first-ever automobile race, the 1894 Paris to Rouen.

From the methodical mind of a determined engineer and the audacious spirit of his wife, a revolution had been born. The path had been fraught with financial crises, technical hurdles, and public ridicule, but the vision of a horseless carriage had survived. By the turn of the century, Benz & Cie. had grown from a small workshop into the world's largest automobile manufacturer, with 430 employees and a production of 572 cars in 1899 alone.
