Across the sea in Japan, a different kind of ball game was taking shape around the 7th century AD, likely influenced by its Chinese predecessor. Known as Kemari (蹴鞠), which uses the same characters as Cuju, this game was less about competition and more about cooperation and ceremony. The first evidence of Kemari dates to around 644 AD. The objective was not to score goals, but for a group of players, typically eight, to work together to keep a single ball from touching the ground. This cooperative spirit set it apart from most other ancient ball games.

Kemari was played on a small, square, flat area of earth, with players dressed in ornate and colourful traditional court attire from the Heian period (794-1185), including distinctive long-sleeved jackets and hats. The ball, called a mari, was made of deerskin, about eight inches in diameter, and was light and hollow after being shaped by stuffing it with barley grains. Players could use their feet, knees, back, and head to keep the ball aloft, passing it amongst themselves with soft, controlled kicks. A good player, or mariashi, was praised not for power, but for delivering the ball in a way that was easy for the next player to receive. The game was highly ritualized, often played at Shinto shrines during festivals, and was a popular pastime among court nobles and samurai for centuries. Unlike Cuju, Kemari has survived to the present day, preserved as a cultural tradition and performed at festivals, a graceful, living link to the ancient world of courtly leisure.

Meanwhile, in Ancient Greece, a far more boisterous and combative game was being played. Known as Episkyros (ἐπίσκυρος), it was a team sport, typically involving 12 to 14 players on each side. While it involved kicking, the primary method of moving the ball was throwing, making it a distant relative to both soccer and rugby. The playing field was marked by a central line, called a skyros, and two back lines. The aim was to force the opposing team back over their own line, primarily by throwing the ball over their heads.

Episkyros was known for its physicality. It was a game that prized teamwork but also allowed for a significant degree of violence, making it a popular activity, especially in the militaristic society of Sparta. Women were also known to have participated in the game. A spectator in Greece was once recorded as having his leg broken after getting caught in the middle of a play, a testament to the game's rough-and-tumble nature. A variation of the game called Phaininda was also played, its name supposedly deriving from a word meaning "to deceive," which suggests that trickery and feints were a key part of the strategy.

The Romans, ever keen to adopt and adapt Greek culture, developed their own version of Episkyros, which they called Harpastum. The name comes from the Greek word harpazein, meaning "to seize" or "to snatch," which provides a vivid clue about the nature of the game. Harpastum was even more intense and physically demanding than its Greek predecessor, and it became a favorite training exercise for Roman legionaries, valued for its ability to build strength, speed, and aggression. The game was played with a small, hard ball, about the size of a modern softball, that was stuffed with materials like feathers or grass.

While the precise rules of Harpastum are not fully known, descriptions indicate it was a violent struggle for possession. Two teams would compete on a rectangular field, with the objective being to keep the ball on their own side of a central line for as long as possible. Players would pass the ball between teammates while being tackled, blocked, and wrestled by their opponents. Interceptions, fumbles, and aggressive physical contact were all part of the play. The famous physician Galen, writing in the 2nd century AD, praised Harpastum as an excellent form of exercise despite its brutality. As the Roman Empire expanded, it's highly probable that legionaries played Harpastum across Europe, potentially planting the seeds for the folk football games that would emerge in the centuries to follow.

Half a world away, the civilizations of Mesoamerica were engaged in a ball game of profound cultural and religious significance. Played for millennia by peoples including the Olmec, Maya, and Aztecs, this game was known by various names, such as Pitz in the Mayan language and Ōllamaliztli in the Aztec tongue of Nahuatl. The game's origins may date back as far as 1650 BC, making it one of the oldest known team sports in history. It was played on distinctive I-shaped stone courts, over 1,500 of which have been discovered by archaeologists throughout the region. The ball itself was a remarkable innovation: a solid, heavy sphere made from the latex of rubber trees, a technology unknown in Europe at the time.

The rules varied between cultures and over time, but a common version involved two teams trying to propel the heavy rubber ball through a small stone hoop mounted high on the wall of the court. A critical and distinguishing feature was that players were typically forbidden from using their hands or feet; instead, they had to strike the ball with their hips, thighs, and sometimes their upper arms. The game was incredibly difficult and often brutal, with the solid nine-pound ball capable of causing serious injury.

But this was far more than mere sport. The Mesoamerican ball game was deeply intertwined with mythology and ritual. For the Maya, the court was seen as a portal to the underworld, and the game itself was a re-enactment of the cosmic struggles between gods. The stakes could be incredibly high, as the game was often associated with human sacrifice. Carvings on ball court walls at sites like Chichén Itzá depict players, possibly the captains of either the losing or winning team, being decapitated as part of the ritual. This association with life and death underscored the game's sacred importance, a world away from the simple recreation of other ancient ball games.

Beyond these major examples, other cultures developed their own unique kicking games. In Australia, Aboriginal people played a game known as Marn Grook. The name, from the Woiwurrung language, simply means "ball game." It was a cooperative game played at large gatherings, sometimes with more than one hundred players. The objective was to keep a ball, made from possum skin, in the air by kicking and catching it. Players were praised for their acrobatic leaps to catch the ball, with some reportedly jumping as high as five feet off the ground. There was no scoring system or designated winner; the game would simply continue for hours. Some historians have suggested a possible link between the high-marking style of Marn Grook and the development of Australian Rules Football in the 19th century.

In North America, some Native American tribes played a game called Pasuckuakohowog, a name from the Algonquin language meaning "they gather to play ball with the foot." Records from the 17th century describe this as a violent and chaotic affair, played on beaches or clearings with goals that could be up to a mile apart and teams consisting of hundreds of players. The game was notoriously rough, with broken bones and serious injuries being common occurrences. Players often wore paint and ornaments to disguise themselves and avoid retaliation after a particularly fierce match. It was less a sport and more a substitute for warfare, often followed by a large celebratory feast involving both teams.
