He also made a crucial, and at the time controversial, deal with competitor Microsoft for a $150 million investment to ensure the continued development of Microsoft Office for the Mac.

Created by the ad agency TBWA\Chiat\Day, the "Think Different" campaign featured no products. Instead, it consisted of black-and-white portraits of iconic figures like Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi. The campaign aimed to reposition Apple as a brand for the creative, the rebellious, and those who dared to challenge the status quo, creating a powerful emotional connection with consumers.
The first product of this new era was the iMac G3, released in 1998. The iPod's success was amplified by the iTunes Music Store, launched in 2003. It offered legal music downloads for 99 cents a song, providing a user-friendly alternative to the illegal file-sharing services of the day. The combination of the iPod and iTunes revolutionized the music industry and solidified Apple's position as a leader in consumer electronics. By 2022, Apple had sold an estimated 450 million iPods.
As successful as the iPod was, Jobs recognized a looming threat: mobile phones were beginning to incorporate music players. This realization sparked the company's next "bet-the-company" project. Beginning in 2004, a top-secret initiative, codenamed "Project Purple," began work on an Apple phone. The level of secrecy was extreme; hardware and software teams worked in isolation, and many Apple employees had no idea what the final product would look like.
Development was fraught with challenges. Prototypes were buggy, dropped calls, and had poor battery life. As late as the fall of 2006, Jobs told the team they didn't have a viable product. On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs took the stage at Macworld Expo to introduce the iPhone. He then revealed they were not three separate devices, but one, called the iPhone. Described as more democratic and collaborative, Cook focused on empowering his teams and building consensus. His leadership has been characterized by a focus on people, strategy, and execution.
Under Cook's stewardship, Apple has not only continued to thrive but has reached unprecedented financial heights. From 2011 to 2020, he doubled the company's revenue and profit, and its market value soared from $348 billion to $1.9 trillion. He has overseen the launch of major new product categories, most notably the Apple Watch, and has significantly expanded Apple's services division, which includes offerings like Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple TV+.
Cook has also placed a strong emphasis on the company's values, advocating for environmental preservation, data privacy, and improving labor conditions in its supply chain.
