Skeletal remains have traditionally been classified into two main types: a more robust "Mechta-Afalou" type, associated with the preceding Iberomaurusian culture, and a more gracile "Proto-Mediterranean" type. For a long time, this led to theories of migrating peoples from the east, possibly related to the Natufian culture of the Levant, supplanting or mixing with the indigenous Iberomaurusians. However, more recent genetic studies have painted a more nuanced picture.
