Introduction

This book argues that the most consequential front of the Second World War was not drawn on a map but assembled in workshops, shipyards, hospitals, union halls, and kitchens. Employers, many of whom had never considered hiring women for anything beyond clerical tasks, often approached the idea with skepticism, fearing that women lacked the physical strength, mechanical aptitude, or emotional resilience for industrial work. Government agencies and nascent wartime organizations played a pivotal role in this initial outreach. The Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor, for example, which had long advocated for better working conditions and fairer wages for women, now found itself in a new position of influence. These initial programs were designed as auxiliary units, meaning women technically served with the Army and Navy, not in them. One of the less visible, yet equally vital, forms of early mobilization was the expansion of volunteer efforts. Women had always been the backbone of community organizing and charitable work, and the looming war provided a powerful new impetus. From knitting socks for soldiers to organizing local blood drives, women across the country channeled their energies into a myriad of volunteer activities. These efforts, while often unpaid and largely unacknowledged in official histories of economic mobilization, were indispensable. They built the social infrastructure that would support both the fighting forces and the communities back home, demonstrating women's organizational prowess and deep commitment.

The transition from peace to war was not a sudden, dramatic flip of a switch; it was a gradual unfolding, a slow burn that intensified with each passing month.
