Borderlands of Empire examines how the Qing state expanded into Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang, and the surrounding high plateaus, and how those regions in turn reshaped the empire that claimed them. At the heart of the narrative is a reassessment of frontier dynamics and colonial governance.
