Unlike modern plows, they didn't turn the soil over but merely scratched its surface. Initially pulled by human labor, the domestication of animals, particularly oxen around 4000 BCE, revolutionized plowing, allowing larger areas of land to be tilled more efficiently.

Beyond basic cultivation and harvesting, early farmers also developed rudimentary irrigation systems. These involved constructing canals from dirt or sometimes more permanent materials to collect rainwater, both preventing floods and providing a vital water source during dry periods.
