An effective creative process involves a rhythmic oscillation between these two modes – expanding possibilities and then narrowing them down, repeating the cycle as needed.
Consider the role of knowledge and expertise in creativity. While often seen as separate from "pure" creativity, a robust knowledge base is, in fact, foundational. You can't connect dots you don't have. Expertise provides the raw material, the dots themselves, that the brain then reconfigures and reassociates in novel ways.
